Story Telling, Innovation, Unicorns, Mega Trends and Other Seemingly Unrelated Related Things

Adults are boring to younger people, starting virtually every story with “when I was young” or “back in my days”, which is inevitably followed by rolling eyes and sighs. What these stories mean, however, is that, in the words of the great Bob Dylan, the times, they are a changin’. Indeed, every generation seems to change quicker than the one before it, and this is also seen in the world of businesses. The need for crowdsourcing software for business operations is a perfect example of that. Crowdsourcing was virtually unheard of, and now it is fully digital already! This technological change makes us raise our expectations and push our imagination’s boundaries. But change is hard to deal with, so how do you cope?

Disruptive Innovation

One of the best ways for organizations to cope with change is through disruptive innovation. This is radical change, change that happens from one minute to the next, the type of change that frightens most people. So how do you get started with this?

  1. Unicorns. Unicorns, as creatures, do not exist. What does exist, however, is privately held companies that are worth at least $1 billion. They have started what is known as The Unicorn Leaderboard and you should check what they are doing, because they do things completely differently. And doing so has paid off massively for them. Look through their reports and be inspired by them.
  2. Mega trends. A mega trend will make you look at the big picture, which includes the changes in how consumer behavior has changed. It is about being inspired by today’s trends and trying to figure out what those mean for the future. Your business then needs to learn how you can incorporate that future. There are various thought leaders and trend watchers that you can turn to for information and to be inspired by.
  3. Human beings. Everything is technological, electronic, digital, connected, and online today. That is a good thing, but it can also cause people to forget that, at the end of the day, people are still human as well. If you want to consider how technology will change the future, don’t look at it through a technological lens. Humans are the ones who allow technology to take over, or who push it away. Think about what humans actually need and want, and go from there.

Human beings, unicorns, and mega trends all go hand in hand. These are all the things you need to have around you, and to immerses yourself in, to drive innovation forward within your business. In fact, embracing that is something that you can also apply to your personal life, improving the way you live it. Standing still and resisting change, reminiscing about “the good old days” will get you nowhere. Instead, being innovative yourself and understanding that the future is bright and exciting, is what will keep you, and your organization going, as well as relevant in today’s changing world. Change won’t wait for you!
